The Cats is a band from the Netherlands (the town of Volendam). De group had 19 Top 10-hits in the Dutch charts between 1966 and 1980. Their music is characterized by big orchestral arrangments and beautiful vocal harmonies. They had the most influence on a typical Dutch music-style, called ‘Palingsound’, which was developed by bands from Volendam. Among them are The George Baker Selection and BZN.

De aanhouder wint, wordt vaak beweerd. The Cats zullen dat meteen beamen, want het duurde zeven singles voor ze voor de eerste maal op 1 stonden in de Nederlandse top 40.

Dat gebeurde met de single ‘Lea’ waarmee ze op 23 november 1968 Heintje van de eerste plaats verstootten met ‘Heidschi bumbeidschi’.

The Cats begonnen zes jaar eerder als The Mystic Four en nadien als The Everley Kosters. Er werd hier en daar opgetreden in kleine zalen tot ze hun naam veranderen in The Blue Cats later ingekort tot The Cats. 5 Volendammers vormden de basis van de toenmalige formatie: Piet Veerman, Jaap Schilder, Arnold Mühren, Theo Klouwer en Cees Veerman. Volendam de bakermat van de palingpop met bekende groepen als BZN, Left Side, Nick en Simon en Jan Smit.

The Cats wonnen een talentjacht van Radio Veronica en mochten het nummer ‘Jukebox’ opnemen en dat werd hun eerste single op het Volendamse Durlaphone label. Je kon met je oren dicht horen dat dit technisch niet je van het was. Er werd dan maar gesolliciteerd bij platenmaatschappij Bovema en het was meteen bingo. In 1967 namen ze hun eerste echte single op en ‘What a crazy life’werd gelijk een bescheiden hit. Datzelfde jaar scoorden ze nog drie hits met als uitschieter ‘Sure he’s a cat’.

Toch was het wachten tot 1968 vooraleer ze echt zouden doorbreken, ook al hadden ze inmiddels een hele schare fans om zich heen verzameld, met ‘Times were when’. In de zomer van dat jaar geraakte die single tot op de 2de plaats van de Nederlandse top 40 met meteen nadien hun eerste nummer 1 ‘Lea’, een liedje met daar aan een triest verhaal gekoppeld. Het werd opgedragen aan één van de trouwste fans van The Cats, Lea, die vanaf het begin bij elk concert aanwezig was en op weg naar een van die concerten bij een auto-ongeval om het leven kwam.

Intussen klonken The Cats qua muzikale aanpak ook heel anders dan in het begin. De arrangementen werden tot in het kleinste detail uitgewerkt, met veel aandacht voor strijkers. Het was een idee van Wim Jongbloed om op die manier te arrangeren, iets dat hij jarenlang voor de groep zou blijven doen.
