BAKER SELECTION (ARTIST BIOGRAPHY)
On a grey day in autumn ‘69 a group was formed in a
village near the river Zaan in one of the industrial districts of
Holland.
Five musicians, ex members from several other groups, joined singer
George Baker and thus created the George Baker Selection.
Two weeks later Negram-Records offered the team a contract and
produced their début disc “Little Green Bag”.
The record rocketed into the charts within ten days and reached the
Dutch top ten.
Just a month later the same record turned out to be number one in
Belgium and reactions started pouring in from all over the world.
The George Baker composition was consequently released in all major
European countries.
Now it happened, that a very keen guy from the states came to Europe
to widen his impact on the record market and to get distribution for
his labels.
He picked up three records from Holland. Jerry Ross got these three
items in the charts on his Colossus label. And one out of the three
was Little Green Bag”.
The George Baker Selection was established as one of the worlds
leading recording acts within five months of its formation.
The group feared a hard time in getting a follow-up to “Littie Green
Bag”.
However, the first, the very first tune, which the boys recorded for
their first album, was “Dear Ann”.
We don’t have to tell you about that one. It went just like “Little
Green Bag”, the same hit-story. Only this song didn’t just pop into
the top-ten in Holland but went straight to number one as best-selling
Dutch record.
The album “Little Green Bag” contains both hits by the George Baker
Selection plus ten brandnew recordings.
All except Dylan’s “I'll Be Your Baby Tonight” are composed by lead-singer
George Baker and bass player Jan Visser.
